Many thanks to Kevin Matthews for his review. Amazing!

“Remake, Remix, Rip-Off, to abbreviate it slightly, is a wonderful celebration of the sheer lunacy that was the Turkish film industry in the ’60s and ’70s. Many people may have heard of Turkish Star Wars or Turkish Spiderman, but this immerses you in a world of dubious pleasures such as Turkish versions of Dillinger, Bonnie & Clyde, E.T, Death Wish, and much, much more. You may struggle to keep your brain inside your skull while being bombarded with clips, but it’s worth it.”

Edinburgh Intl. Film Festival 2015: Documentary Picks by Physical Impossibility

1. Remake, Remix, Rip Off (dir Cem Kaya, 2014)

21/06, 20:35 at Cineworld | 28/06, 13:40 at Cineworld

I couldn’t not pick this, though I’m 100% sure it’ll be fantastic. I’ve written before on the strange phenomenon of Turkish Remakesploitation and found research materials pretty thin, to non-existent, especially in terms of first person accounts. I can say with confidence, then, that this is not only a long-overdue excavation of a fascinating period of world cinema but it’s also a compelling tale of gung ho creativity and extreme cheekiness, which should really appeal to absolutely everyone. Director Cem Kaya is attending the screening on Sunday 21/06.

Indie Wire’s The 20 Best Documentaries Of 2015 So Far

“Remake, Remix, Rip-Off” got an honorable mention in Indie Wire’s list of “The 20 Best Documentaries Of 2015 So Far.”

In the category of docs about film and filmmakers, there have been a host of great entries already, of which no fewer than three take a socio-cultural look at the Hollywood films of the ’80s: the rambunctious video piracy in Turkey doc “Remake Remix Rip Off”; the fun, well-reconstructed story of “Chuck Norris vs Communism” in Ceaucescu’s Romania, which almost unfolds like a thriller itself; and “Electric Boogaloo: The Story Of Cannon Films” which some of us enjoyed more than others, but covers the cheapie genre giant’s heyday.

Short review in 400 films blog

Another short and encouraging Spanish review from 400 films blog. We copy pasted the part concerning Remake, Remix, Rip-Off. For the long review of the DocsBarcelona festival, here’s the link:

http://www.400films.com/blog/2015/05/docsbarcelona-2015-la-lista-de-falciani

Our documentary was screened yesterday at the Aegean Documentary Days in Izmir. Due to the ban of critical activities at campus, the festival had to move from the Ege University to the French Cultural Center. The university’s administration is trying to censor academics, students and critical groups. Censorship and restraint are permanent now. The university’s “cinema campus” however is showing mainstream comedies.

Good luck and success to our friends in Izmir!
